Stoker: Loss of Submarine AE2, Sea of Marmara, April 30, 1915

Picture of the extract of Stoker's diary on loss of AE2

For reasons Stoker could not explain, AE2 suffered a near catastrophic loss of trim. Over three harrowing dives Stoker struggled to regain control over AE2 with Turkish forces in pursuit. After surfacing for the second time, the hull of AE2 was holed by Turkish gunfire. Committed to a third dive, AE2 began to take on water and quickly passed her safe operating depth. With the engines in full reverse and the ballast tanks blown, the crew managed to halt the dive and force AE2 to the surface one more for the last time.
